Boat Training

Isis School of Boat Handling

Based at Tooley’s Boatyard in Banbury on the Oxford canal, the Isis School Of Boat Handling is a well-established and highly-regarded training school for inland-waterway boating. Initially founded to run local courses, it is now a fully-certified Royal Yachting Association (RYA) School Of Instruction.

Running the RYA Inland Helmsman Certificate, amongst other more specialised courses, are Instructors Matthew Armitage and Martin Pocock. With over 30 years of experience between them skippering various different-sized vessels on both rivers and canals home and abroad, they are both qualified as RYA Instructors aswell as DOT Passenger-Boat ‘Boatmasters’. Ideally suited to both beginners and those more experience alike, it can be run over one or two days, dependant on requirements.

Also available at the school is the RYA Diesel Engine Course, run by a former dockyard marine engineer. This one-day course is again suited to those who wish to ‘fine-tune’ their knowledge, as well as complete novices.

Both fun and educational, all our courses are essential for those keen to learn more about boating and the way they work.

Our range of courses include:

RYA Inland Helmsman Certificate (One or two days)
RYA Diesel Engine Course
ICC and CEVNI Test (legally required for private boating abroad)
‘Short Refresher’ Boat Handling Course
Hourly specialised courses.
Rope Splicing
