Food Shops - Clothes Shops

Greenwich squeezes an interesting variety of retailers in a surprising small area. Although Greenwich does have some of the usual High Street names, such as Iceland and Gateway, they are sparse. Greenwich, instead boasts a wide assortment of the ethnic, strange, flamboyant and unusual.

There are three markets: The Antique Market in Burney Street; The Village Market in Stockwell Street; and the Covered Market off Greenwich Church Street. The Burney Street & Stockwell Street parts of the Market used to be one big market. However, the Greenwich Cinema has recently been in the middle. The covered market sometimes features additional entertainment such as buskers which all adds to the atmosphere.

A range of the markets and shops in Greenwich appears below:

Food Shops

Specialists in British unpasteurised cheeses. Also supply cheeses from Spain, Germany, Holland, France, Norway, Switzerland, Greece and Italy. The Cheese Board was the Regional Winner of 'Britain's Best Cheese Shop 1994'. They also stock cheese accompaniments such as pickles, chutneys and wines.

Clothes Shops

The ObservatoryObservatory
Greenwich Church Street, London, SE10
Map Ref 36.
The Observatory sells a wide variety of second hand and vintage clothes at very good prices, particularly when they have a sale. The Observatory has a wide range of Seventies clothes, which are excellent for 'retro' clubbing, and many other more vintage clothes. Value is reasonable too: the reviewer bought a 1930's dress coat for £30.

BullfrogsBullfrogs
Greenwich Church Street, London, SE10 Map Ref 37.
Next door to Observatory is another clothing shop called Bullfrogs. The clothes are mainly new, with the exception of some second-hand jeans and they also have a number of designs which are made exclusively for the shop. As an example, the author of this piece purchased some glittery jeans there for around £30. As well as doing their own clothes Bullfrogs has a shoe section and a reasonably priced hairdresser. They also had a small selection of CD's. They sell some French Connection clothes for both men and women and a variety of other clothes. Boasting such impressive names as Stussy, which are trendy in the London night-clubs at the moment. As well as selling clothes, Bullfrogs has a shoe section and a reasonably priced hairdresser.

EmporiumEmporium
Creek Road, London, SE10 Map Ref 39.
Just over the other side of the street from Bullfrogs is Emporium. Emporium sells more expensive second hand clothes than Observatory but it tends to stock more antique clothing which goes some way to explaining the small difference in price.

Benneton F1Bennetton Formula 1
Greenwich Market, London, SE10 Map Ref 38.
In the market place opposite the Coach and Horses pub is the Bennetton Formula 1 merchandise shop which sells Bennetton Formula 1 racing team paraphernalia. This shop is not open all the time so it is worth giving them a ring to see what times they are open.
