Royal Docks
Once
the centre of the shipbuilding industry on the Thames, the Royal Docks are undergoing
vast changes. The eastern part of Docklands is a must for any visitor to London.
Take a ride on the Docklands Light Railway and take in the spectacular views
of Docklands, Canary Wharf, the University of East London Docklands Campus,
the Millennium Dome and the Thames Barrier. And stop off at some of the attractions:
ExCeL,
Custom House, E16 1XL.
The UK's newest £250 million purpose built venue for exhibitions, conferences
and events opened in November 2000. Just six miles from Trafalgar Square, ExCeL
is set along a mile and a half of the Royal Docks in Newham. The complex includes
over 1400 new hotel rooms, with an additional 3500 rooms nearby. Visitors can
enter ExCeL via the glass pyramid entranceway and walk down the Central Boulevard.
First class restaurants coupled with designer coffee bars and bistros will all
be opening throughout 2001 along the waterfront whilst former warehouses will
be transformed into nightclubs and bars. ExCeL will host the Holiday and Travel
Show and the London Boat Show.

Thames Barrier Park,
North Woolwich Road, Silvertown.
Visit London's newest riverside park for fifty years, opened November
2000 by Ken Livingstone, Mayor of London. The park was designed by renowned
modernist Alain Provost, who was also responsible for the Parc Andre Citroen
in Paris. The park is a stunning piece of architecture with a strong continental
flavour. On entrance visitors are greeted by a stunning water fountain that
flows onto its key feature of a sunken landscaped garden, called the Green Dock.
The Green Dock runs across the park and a promenade running along the riverside,
making it unlike any other park in the UK. The park includes the 'Pavilion of
Remembrance' commemorating war victims from the London borough of Newham. For
the children, there is a specially designed playground and basketball court.
DLR: Custom House, then cross footbridge and continue to North Woolwich Road.

Three Mills
Three
Mills Lane, E3.
To the northwest of the borough lies Three Mills Island, surrounded by the River
Lea, the Prescott Channel and the Channelsea River. Here you will find a rare
survivor of Newham's built heritage, as Three Mills is named after the House
Mill, which is the oldest and largest tidal Mill of its kind in the country.
It was built in 1776 and ground grain for distilling for over 165 years. Recently
restored, the House Mill contains old millstones and vast waterwheels, which
last turned in the 1940s. There are many things to do at Three Mills.
Visitors
can explore the waterways and beyond with a cruise on 'Pride of Lea',
following a range of routes past London's hidden industrial past. A range of
events, at Three Mills Environmental Education Centre, are programmed
for each year, from bread baking to willow weaving, providing fun for all the
family. On the first Sunday of each month, a craft fair is set up along
the cobbled waterfront, selling ceramics, knitwear and jewellery.
More recently, Three Mills has become famous in the world of films with
the presence of Three Mills Studio. Television programmes 'London's Burning',
'Bad Girls' and 'Big Brother' were all filmed here, while the recording studios
are familiar to stars such as Robbie Williams.
