The Oxford Playhouse
Beaumont Street, OX1. (
Map Ref 5.)
Oxford PlayhouseSet in a relatively modern, yet smart theatre very close to the Ashmolean Museum, the Oxford Playhouse hosts a wide range of plays, operas and ballets. Visited by both local theatre companies and national companies alike, there is always diversity at the Playhouse, with contemporary theatre represented by great English playwrights such as Alan Ayckbourn and classical theatre by anyone from William Shakespeare to Bertolt Brecht. Indeed, many famous actors have made their name here at the Playhouse.

Whether you want a good time with your children at the panto, watch a quality performance of a renowned play, or open your mind to some of the innovative dance troupes and comedians, you have an excellent choice at the Oxford Playhouse. You can contact them on 01865 305305.

Apollo Theatre
George Street, OX1. (
Map Ref 6.)
The vast Apollo Theatre, which holds 1,800 seats, is in many respects like the Playhouse, except that it concentrates more on music and dance. Home to the fabulous Welsh National Opera and the Glyndebourne Touring Company, whose opera constantly reaches new heights, they are also very much in tune with popular, light-hearted entertainment, and they put on quite a few events for the family, most predominantly fun musicals.

The Apollo essentially bases its programme around commercial stand-up acts, comedians, musicals, and faded rock groups and solo acts.

The shows at the Apollo are in general less high brow than at the Playhouse, but they still generate a lot of fun and enthusiasm. The bawdiness is broken up, however, by Italian operas such as La Traviata and Tosca, usually performed by the two resident opera groups. If you want to subject yourself to excellent opera or take the children out for some supercharged musical entertainment, you cannot get too many places that will cast a shadow over the Apollo. You can contact them on 01865 244544.
