Founded back in 1824, The National Gallery is one the World's most famous collections of Art.  It has a  fine European art collection from medieval times to around 1920. All the great movements and old masters are here, and there are more than 2000 paintings in the collection.  The nucleus of the collection stems from Sir John Julius Angerstein a wealthy collector who left his entire picture collection to the Nation in 1823.
The building housing the collection was completed in 1838, with the notable modern addition of the Sainsbury Wing donated by the Sainsbury family and completed in 1991 in a style chosen to harmonise with the original classical portico.
