Dulwich Picture Gallery is England's oldest public art gallery. The magnificent collection of Old Masters, including works by Poussin, Claude, Rubens, Murillo, Van Dyck, Rembrandt, Watteau and Gainsborough, was originally assembled for the King of Poland in the 1790s. When the King was forced to abdicate, an alternative home was found for the paintings in the "clean air of Dulwich". The Gallery, designed by Sir John Soane with new building recently completed by Rick Mather, houses the founders to this day in their Mausoleum.
