The Tate Modern Gallery opened on 12 May 2000 in the transformed Bankside Power Station in Southwark. It displays the Tate's collection of international modern art from 1900, and features major works by the the most influential artists of this century including Bourgeois, Picasso, Matisse, Mondrian, Duchamp, Dali, Bacon, Giacometti, Pollock, Rothko and Warhol.  The intention is that it will be a gallery for the twenty-first century, exhibiting new art as it is created.

The former Bankside Power Station (which was decommissioned in 1981) was designed by Sir Giles Gilbert Scott and is also a listed building. It has been imaginatively converted by the Swiss architects, Herzog & de Meuron to provide a vast interior space for exhibition of modern works of art.

The most visible change to the building is a glass structure running the length of the roof, which adds two floors, provides natural light for the upper galleries, and gives outstanding views of London. There are good refreshment facilities and excellent loos. The Tate Modern is adjacent to Bankside Pier and the Millennium Bridge over the river to St. Pauls.
