One of London's most intriguing museums, the National Portrait Gallery exhibits portraits of famous British people painted, sculpted or photographed by distinguished artists from the 18th century to the late 20th century. Kings and Queens, famous statesmen, sports stars, football stars, politicians and assorted characters from every high-profile walk of life are especially in evidence once the 20th century is reached, but you are not only invited to play a game of "let's spot the star" because the quality of the art is of an exceptionally high standard.
From Elizabeth I to Oscar Wilde, William Shakespeare to Florence Nightingale.....with the largest collection of portraiture in the world, the National Portrait Gallery has over 10,000 works of famous British men and women who have created the history and culture of the nation from the Middle Ages until the present day.
In addition to the main collection, the Gallery offers a varied programme of special exhibitions throughout the year. The recently completed Ondaatje Wing offers new public galleries, a roof-top Restaurant with views across London and an IT Gallery offering a touchscreen database of the Gallery's collection. The Gallery is open until 9pm on Thursday and Friday evenings with special evening lectures and music every week. Admission free.
