Maidenhead

Jubilee Clock Tower

Jubilee Clock Tower

opp. Maidenhead Rail Station, , SL6
Tel: 0207 601 5545

Unless you are a fan of English history or architecture, you may walk past the Clock Tower without even acknowledging its presence. Indeed, its surroundings no longer auspicious, with big office blocks and a local railway station engulfing it.The tower was built to celebrate Queen Victoria's Diamond Jubilee in 1897 when she had been on the throne for 60 years. Obviously Maidenhead was only too pleased with what she had achieved over that time, for they say her progress was unparalleled and her reign "(made) for the happiness of the human race." The foundations then reverberate with the words "GOD SAVE THE QUEEN".

If you look carefully at the south facing clock you will see a black diamond, which is supposed to face Queen Victoria's favourite house, namely Osbourne House on the Isle of Wight. Yes, just an insignificant piece of trivia, but you learn something new every day. It may come in handy in a general knowledge quiz.

There is free admission and it is open from Monday to Friday between 10:00 and 17:00. If you want more information phone 0207 601 5545.
