Queen's House Romney Rd Greenwich SE10 9NF Tel: 0208 858 4422 Website: www.nmm.ac.uk
This elegant mansion, designed by Inigo Jones, became a place for entertaining the Stuart court under the direction of Charles I’s queen, Henrietta Maria. The splendid, well-proportioned building is now framed by Wren’s design for the Old Royal Naval College and retains its central position between river and park.
Through the centre of the house runs a cobbled roadway and the house forms a bridge to allow royalty to pass from the old riverside palace of Placentia to the Royal Park. It is now used as a gallery of maritime art and contains many portraits of distinguished seafarers by famous painters; a Tudor room and a gallery dedicated to paintings of Greenwich through history.
Short term exhibitions drawn from the National Maritime Museum's vast art collection, contrast with the New Visions exhibits by contemporary artists.
Admission free. Open daily 10.00-17.00. Closed 24-26 December. Wheelchair accessible.
