Mansion House is the official London home of the Lord Mayor of the City of London.  It was built in 1739 to designs by George Dance the Elder in the Classical style, and sits opposite the Bank of England and the Royal Exchange.

Mansion House contains many beautiful rooms including the famous Egyptian Room, which is full of elaborate plasterwork and decorative wood carvings.  From the balcony at the front of the house, underneath the huge portico, the Lord Mayor watches the processions which form his Lord Mayor's Show every November.  It is not normally open to the public.

"The Lord Mayor's Show - What a wonderful event!

I was fortunate enough to make it up to the City of London (the central business district, known as the Square Mile) on Saturday November 11th in time to see the Lord Mayor's Show. This magnificent pageant has been going on continuously since the Middle Ages and it is a huge source of fun and amusement to the half a million spectators who line the narrow streets of London to see the show. After the pageant we made our way down to the River Thames to watch a spectacular fireworks show, along with huge throngs of people. All in all, a wonderful day out in the wonderful city of London, and all for FREE! We are so lucky to be able to take part in these amazing events in the greatest City in the world - but then I am biased!"
