This institution was founded by Sir Thomas Gresham, an Elizabethan merchant and courtier, in 1565 as a centre for commerce of all kinds.Queen Elizabeth I gave it the first Royal Charter. It sits in the heart of the City of London opposite the Bank of England and Mansion House

The building you now see dates from 1844.  It is now the centre for shops selling luxury goods.
