The 14th century gateway on the north side of Charterhouse Square leads into the place where there was a large Carthusian monastery in the Middle Ages. The monastery was one of thousands which were destroyed by Henry VIII when he became supreme head of the Church of England. The buildings were later turned into a hospital and famous school under the name of Charterhouse School.
Among the former pupils of the school were John Wesley of the Methodist movement and Sir Robert Baden Powell the founder of the Boy Scout movement. In 1872 the school moved to a site in Surrey and the old buildings were used by St Bartholomew's Medical School. You can still see the old Chapel and cloisters.
