Abingdon - St Helen's Church

East St. ABINGDON ,

The County Hall at Abingdon may be large, but St. Helen's Church puts even that building to shame. Keeping watch over the town of Abingdon, this 13th century church is a famous local landmark. It is reckoned that there is an even earlier church under the present one that dates from the 7th to 8th century. One thing you cannot miss are the bells, which are a perfect waking-up call to all its citizens in the morning. No need for alarm clocks in this town!
If you are in Abingdon you must not miss out on a visit to the church's Guild Chapels. One of the guilds, the Lady Chapel, has an angelic painted ceiling as well as an ornate candelabra. These guilds are influential in giving St. Helen's a rather unusual look, because the church is wider than it is long. Whether you are a church goer or not, you take a quick look at St. Helen's Church purely for its decorative artwork and grand architectural worth. You can contact St. Helen's on 01235 520144.
