West EndApsley House Hyde Park CornerLONDON W1J 7NT
Apsley House is one of London's finest mansions and was the former home of the Duke of Wellington - the one who "marched his men to the top of the hill and then marched them down again". It is still the London home of one of the Duke's descendents. Inside you can view many aspects of the first Duke's life, most outstandingly his amazing art treasures which are set in the palatial State Rooms. Many are from the Spanish Royal Collection, including superb paintings by Vesasquez, Rubens, Van Dyke and Goya. You can also visit the famous Waterloo Gallery where the annual Banquet still takes place to celebrate the Battle of Waterloo which, famously the Duke and his allies in the rest of Europe won by defeating Napoleon. Many memorabilia of the Duke are also exhibited, including medals and and original pair of Wellington Boots! You can also see death masks of the Duke and of his famous enemy, Napoleon. The house is managed by English Heritage. They are very good at providing activity packs and trails for children which all serve to help kids appreciate the wonders of what they are seeing.
