Battersea Park | The Japanese Peace Pagoda

The Japanese Peace Pagoda

Battersea Park , SW11

The Japanese Peace Pagoda may also be in Battersea Park, but this monumental structure deserves a column of its own.

The Pagoda was in fact built by Japanese monks and nuns in 1985 and was a gift from the Buddhist Order as a means of celebrating peace around the world. The Pagoda's design was based on ancient Japanese and Indian tradition, but was also made out of reconstituted Portland stone and Canadian Douglas Fir trees. Based around two tiers, the four large gilded statues of the Lord Buddha are to be found in four niches, each of them symbolising a certain stage of the Buddha's development, from his birth and enlightenment to his first sermon and his eventual death.

The Japanese Peace Pagoda is a hugely impressive example of Japanese architecture and is right in keeping with the nature of Battersea Park's other attractions. .
