Left: Embankment Gardens - photo by SW A very welcome relief from the hurly- burly of the Strand these gardens had the Sunday afternoon walkers in mind when they first appeared in mid Victorian England. The gardens sweep a delightful half circle of lawns and trees, but everywhere you go there is a statue reminding us of the virtue of Temperance and other Victorian values. A statue of the founder of Sunday Schools also stands in the flower beds.
