The Millennium Bridge

The Millennium Bridge

 City of London

This amazing structure was built in 2000 to celebrate the dawn of the new Millennium.  It is a
footbridge that links the City and St. Pauls Cathedral to the Tate Modern and the South Bank of London.  The design is totally innovative - being a "sideways suspension" construction - and when it was first opened so many people wanted to walk across it that it "wobbled".  Sarcastic Londoners instantly christened it "The Wibbly Wobbly Bridge", and it was closed so that adjustments could be made to the dampers and suspension system.

It has re-opened and is an immediate success.  Thousands of people use the bridge every day to reach tourist attractions like Shakespeare's Globe Theatre and the Tate Modern, and also to visit St. Paul's Cathedral. The views form the bridge are spectacular, AND you can wave to the people on the boats far below! Don't miss it!

To sum up, despite all its initial problems this lovely bridge is well on the way to being regarded as an icon of the City of London, and has already won its place in the hearts of Londoners everywhere.
