Lambeth Palace

This Palace has been the London home of the Archbishop of Canterbury for over 800 years. It is located on the opposite side of the Thames to the Houses of Parliament and when the Archbishop wanted to visit Westminster he used the horse ferry that operated between his palace and Millbank on the Westminster side.  he also received most of the money collected by the ferrymen and when Lambeth Bridge was opened in 1750 he lost the revenues from the horse ferry.

The buildings you now see were built in 1485 and the gatehouse is original, but a lot of the palace was restored by the Victorians in 1835. Normally it is not open to the public but it is part of the String of Pearls scheme and is open for one weekend a year usually in the Autumn.
