Albert Memorial

The Albert Memorial was built at the instigation of Queen Victoria, after Prince Albert her husband died tragically young in 1861. 

Prince Albert had been responsible for many innovations, including the Great Exhibition in 1851 held in Hyde Park, and the Queen decided that he should be remembered by posterity through this huge monument, the design of which incorporates statues which mirror his achievements. 

It is certainly an interesting example of high Victorian art, and has been the subject of recent restoration.
