The Battle of Britain Monument | The Cenotaph

The Cenotaph

Whitehall LONDON SW1

The Cenotaph is the Nation's memorial to the dead of two World Wars.  It was designed by Sir Edwin Lutyens and unveiled in 1921.  It is the site for the Nation's annual Act of Remembrance in November when the Queen lays a huge wreath on the Cenotaph in remembrance of the sacrifice made by so many people in the wars.

The word cenotaph means "empty tomb" and its simple classical style is much admired.  It is one of the most instantly recognised images in London, and comes alive particularly when the old soldiers sailors and airmen march proudly past with their Royal British Legion banners - a sight which brings lump to the throat.

Behind the Cenotaph is the Foreign Office.
