Charing Cross

Trafalgar Square and Nelson's Column

Trafalgar Square and Nelson's Column

This famous Square was laid out after the Battle of Trafalgar in 1815 - which Admiral Nelson led the British sailors to victory against Napoleon and the French fleet despite "impossible" odds.

A grateful King and Country decided to commemorate the victory and to honour Nelson by the construction of the highest column in London, and an enormous statue to the one-eyed one-armed naval hero.

The Square itself is the scene for many famous celebrations and frequent events throughout the year, like the Chinese New Year, St Patrick's Day, St George's Day, etc.etc.

It provides a great vista looking doen the Mall or Whitehall towards the spires and pinnacles of the Houses of Parliament and Big Ben.
