You do not have to stick to Theatreland around the West End to watch quality theatre with places like the Lyric in Hammersmith about. Voted the Time Out Readers' Award for Venue of the Year in 1998, you cannot dispute the fact that the Lyric deserves this accolade. Mixing up revolutionary theatre with revivals of old plays, introducing promising new plays by young playwrights and classic novels adapted for the stage by revered theatre companies, the Lyric does not just stick to one particular form of theatre but embraces many forms with its all-encompassing arms.

The tickets are commendably cheap, especially because the theatre is now so comfortable and the plays of an exceptionally high quality and wide ranging.

The Lyric has had a colourful history with numerous threatened closures and demolitions and indeed, until recently, the interior decor inside the theatre left something to be desired. That has been transformed however and the auditorium is now gilt and velvet and the audience can sit in comfort. It is always worth checking out the listings at the Lyric.
