 Review

Ukrainian National Opera of Odessa  with Ellen Kent Productions -La Traviata April 2008

It was my second visit to this venue and not being a true opera lover I was unsure what I would feel. This performance of Verdi's La Traviata did not disappoint and in parts it was truly great. There is nothing to beat a full theatre just before curtain goes up and the fidgetting stops and this audience were very enthusiastic. Maria Tsonina as Violetta and Vladimir Racovita as the her lover's father were outstanding in the quality and clarity of the voices.

For the technically minded the venue has a prescenium arch, good acoustics and a raked auditorium which means that you can hear and see everything. As it should be if you are going to pay a fair amount to enjoy an evening of something or other. And they do have a variety of productions ready to visit this venue.

If you live in, near Oxford or are just visiting like me, its easy to reach. George Street is 5 minutes from the station or car parking (when available) and is near a variety of restaurants, pubs and the thriving shopping centre.

The theatre also features a wide range of one-nighters including pop acts such as Busted and Status Quo to comedians such as Ricky Gervais and Billy Connolly. The New Theatre is a Clear Channel Theatre.
