The Savoy Theatre stands on the site of the old Palace of the Savoy built by John of Gaunt Duke of Lancaster  and razed to the ground in the Peasants' Revolt in the 14th Century.  It stands next to the Savoy Hotel, which is currently closed and undergoing a million pound re-furbishment.
