The Royal Festival Hall was opened in 1951 to celebrate the Festival of Britain and has recently been the subject of a multi-million pound makeover. By all reports the results are well worth it. The Philharmonic Orchestra perform a vast range of classical concerts, both ancient and modern, and there are concerts for children as well as celebrations of Mozart, Beethoven and all the other famous composers. The London International Mime Festival is high on the list of events (just as the London Film Festival is to the National Film Theatre.) You even have the opportunity to browse the Festival Hall's Poetry Library, which has the biggest collection of 20th century poetry in Britain. Flamenco dancing makes its distinctive mark felt as well and international chamber music flaunts itself all over the shop.

The current latest performance is that of "Carmen Jones" - the American folk opera based upon Bizet's opera "Carmen". It opens on July 25th and will run until 2nd September 2007. The RFH also boasts some great restaurants and riverside cafes within the building.
