Rainham, Wennington and Aveley Marshes RSPB Nature Reserve

RSPB acquired Rainham, Wennington and Aveley Marshes from the Ministry of Defence in July 2000.  It is the “largest remaining expanse of wetland bordering the upper reaches of the Thames Estuary”.

The reserve is of particular note for its diverse ornithological interest and especially for the variety of breeding birds (especially breeding waders) and the numbers of wintering wildfowl, waders, finches and birds of prey.  The reserve supports the region’s largest population of breeding lapwing and redshank all of which are in serious national decline, and has one of the highest densities of water voles in the UK.

Prior to opening, however, the reserve team are providing a wide range of guided walks, events and volunteering opportunities.  The Education team provide a full programme of Field Teaching using temporary facilities on site.
