Abingdon
Abingdon is a small town 7 miles south of Oxford and about 60 miles west of London, near the M4 and M40. It lies on the River Thames, and - for a town of its size - it has a large number of historic buildings and beautiful open spaces, plus the glorious riverside for you to enjoy visiting. The bridge that crosses the Thames at Abingdon is over 550 years old.
Its proud claim is that it is "England's Oldest Town", and it contains the ruins of an old Abbey, the famous 17th century County Hall, and the magnificent Church of St Helen which dates from mediaeval times. The river frontage is the focal point for many of the town's recreational activities, with the riverside gardens to visit, anglers who fish from the banks, and pleasure cruisers that moor here to visit the town for essential supplies or to pass through the lock.
Abingdon hosts a Heritage Open Weekend in September when many of the town's famous buildings are open free of charge, and there are Morris Dancing displays, farmers' market stalls country market cakes and many other attractions.
