Oxford
There is so much to see and do in the city of Oxford, making it a year round tourist hotspot, so whether you visit just for the day or have planned a short city break you'll find yourself spoilt for choice!
The city is located on the River Thames about 80 miles west of London, and it grew up around the University Colleges, some of which date back to the 13th century. This makes Oxford the oldest university in the English-speaking world. The colleges boast truly stunning architecture and beautiful grounds - the poet Matthew Arnold wrote about "that sweet city with her dreaming spires" and this phrase has immortalised Oxford as "The City of Dreaming Spires".
Some of Oxford's famous attractions include the Bodleian Library, the Ashmolean Museum, the Sheldonian Theatre, the Botanic Gardens, Christ Church Cathedral, and the Radcliffe Camera. You can also visit Oxford Castle Prison museum and enjoy boat trips on the river. Oxford is the setting for many famous scenes from the Harry Potter films, and also provided the location for many of the scenes in the Inspector Morse TV series.
The City also has a wonderful variety of top restaurants, pubs, cafes and wine bars making dining and going out a great experience whatever your age or culinary preference.
There is also a Park and Ride scheme where you park your vehicle outside the city and use public transport - very useful, as parking within the city is at a premium, and most of the undergraduates get around on bicycles.
Here is a selection of places to visit - not a scientific study, just our personal selection:
